About Sarah
From 2025-2026, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Rhodes University’s Environmental Research Centre/The British Academy, Sarah provided film-related technical support and project leadership on the development and implementation of a knowledge translation (KT) methodology resulting in a film series as knowledge products to help unpack key temporality concepts for educational purposes. In this role, Sarah piloted a methodology in participatory interactive AI filmmaking, in collaboration with Cape Town NPO Black Girls Rising. The resulting film The Power Beneath Our Feet (2026) empowers audiences to put themselves in the shoes of girls in low-resource contexts collecting water amid risks, poor services, and climate stress, while fostering safe-spaces for girl-led water solutions.
From May 2022-June 2024, as a Cape Town-based Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, Sarah co-developed/facilitated community-engaged research processes with youth in Kenya, women in Congo Republic, and activists in South Africa on topics related to climate change, planetary health, water justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and the intersections of environmental and human health. Her postdoc experience also involved guest lecturing with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, and developing a range of creative knowledge translation approaches including: augmented reality, interactive art exhibits, a song and music video, an advocacy video, an animated video, and a documentary film.
Sarah has a PhD in Environmental Education from Rhodes University, South Africa, where she explored water justice, reconciliation, and decolonising higher education through a media arts-based water curriculum piloted in South Africa and Canada. She also has an MFA in Film and TV from the University of Cape Town. From 2012-2021, Sarah designed and taught undergraduate courses with Canada’s top art and design post-secondary institution, the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She also provides video consultation services to international development organisations, researchers, and NGOs. Sarah is excited about collaborations, capacity-building and co-creating solutions!
